Retired Fireman Akron Ohio Fire Department

Though it was an inglorious end, it was the end none the less, walking when I shoulda been crawling!

It was obvious at the time, I had made an error in judgement. However, I had no idea what I would learn before it was all resolved. For me, the lessons haven't been the all too obvious outcome, but the journey through the system that I thought was in place to help me, very enlightening!

It turns out the Workers Comp System isn't in place to help workers! It is a liability limiting facade, in place to protect employers, and it is intentionally cryptic and complex to discourage the injured workers or their families from attempting to get due compensation or help. Of course this conclusion will be denied at every turn, but there is no other reason for the hurdles and complexities in their operations. The time limits to accomplish particular features are not well suited to the schedules of doctors or many other professionals. But very clearly spelled out, until they throw in one that is common knowledge, so not expressed on the paper you might receive.

Just realize they are not there for you, they are there for your employer, and you will get screwed if your employer, like mine, only cares about money, and not getting you fixed, or back to work.

Career Development Options Found to be Severely Limited. But then who needs them?

I actually tried to find out about the options available for a retired intelligent individual, through the established educational centers. I have yet to discover an operation that is forth coming with information before there has been money change hands. I realize their efforts are worth a fee, but they won't even give an indication of the options until you agree to sign on for a couple thousand dollars worth of gibberish. "Well, we have programs that are geared to what you have asked, but you must take a class to see if you are really prepared to be evaluated at this level." In other words sign up for years of useless drivel meant to stall your entry into the workforce. Oh, and give us money! Fortunately I am able to be happy, not working for anybody else, I can just sit back and watch life slough by, and be happy doing it. I have more hobbies and interests than time anyway, I just need to find a way to increase the income to match the outgo. But then who doesn't?

The house sold in Akron, at least one of them did, not mine, the mother in laws. It was a good deal as far as I was concerned. She got a fair price considering the condition, and the purchaser got a good house to update, in a great location. The best part of it all, was I didn't have to remodel it, unfortunately there was a hurry in the process that meant my poor unfortunate wife had to clear it out in about a two week period. While trying to preserve some of her mothers posessions from a horde of seagulls from finding nemo "MINE MINE MINE" was all too often the cry as things were uncovered that had been stored for decades. It was ugly, and hurtful, and unnecessary, but not unexpected. But you need to know The Grand Council, to appreciate it. Anyway, had it come at a different time it would have been much more controlled, but with the bilateral knee replacement surgery looming, a week away, it was at least accomplished. Next challenge, finishing the move from Lake Street Garage, and selling someone a tremendous garage and a maintenance free house, in an incredibly great location for mobility, near the central interchange in Akron, for $45,000.00 what a deal. 7 years later, after numerous break-ins (to which no effort was ever put forth by the tax payed responders) a neighbor finally bought it for a pittance. Of course due to the dilligence of the ever watchful police force, it now needs windows, wiring and plumbing. Which are why a pittance was acceptable, and the 7 years of insurance covered nothing. I have a great tax loss, and nowhere to use it.
